Using Carrier Oils

Mix an essential oil with a good carrier oil, such as almond or coconut, at the time of application to lessen the risk of skin sensitivity and to cover a wider area. Apply to the area of concern or the feet, ears, or wrists for quick absorption.

The moment you mix an essential oil with a carrier oil, such as almond, the molecular structure of the essential oil begins to break down and the therapeutic properties begin to diminish. To prevent this, we suggest that you mix them just before using. If you really want essential oils mixed in a carrier oil, such as in a roll on bottle, plan to use it up soon.

Sweet Almond Oil (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis)

You'll love this oil for its wonderful feel. It is one of the most popular with massage therapists. Your friends and family will love almond oil too! It absorbs into the skin faster than other fixed oils. This means that it will go the deepest into the tissues of the skin and leave less mess on your clothes and sheets.

Coconut Oil Fractions (Triglycerides of Caprylic-Capric Acid)

This oil has very little aroma (not like regular coconut oil) and is clear so it doesn't generally stain fabrics. It absorbs into the skin very quickly and doesn't leave you with a greasy feeling.

This mixture is an esterification of coconut oil fatty acids and glycerin. It is also called Fractionated or Light Coconut Oil. This is different from whole coconut oil, which is solid at room temperature.

"All carrier oils consist of a class of molecules called fatty acid triglycerides, which means they contain three, long-chain fatty ester groups. Most all plant derived carrier oils consist entirely of what are called "unsaturated" fatty acid triglycerides and their long fatty ester side chains are typically 16 to 20+ carbon units long. The double bonds in these side chains are susceptible to oxidation over time. Their reaction with oxygen is what produces the rancid odor that you may have noticed in your carrier oils when they get old. Whole coconut oil also has some quite long unsaturated fatty acid triglycerides (which is why it is a solid at room temperature). But the coconut oil is special in that it has a relatively high percentage of shorter length (C8, C10), completely saturated (no double bonds) triglycerides. These smaller fatty acid triglycerides are separated from the whole coconut oil to make Fractionated Coconut Oil. The separation process involves a simple physical separation, so there are no chemical residues."   ~  Butterfly Express April 2007 Newsletter

Using White Lotion and Body Butter

White Lotion and Body Butter are very similar and should be cared for in the same manner, but their ingredients are different. Please read the information below to understand these all-natural, vegan products.

White Lotion is a little lighter than Body Butter and has no scent. It contains emulsifying wax, which is widely used but considered "iffy" by some natural product purists. Note: The properties of emulsifying wax are discussed at the bottom of this page.

Body Butter contains carnauba wax, instead of emulsifying wax, and also olive oil -- both of which give it a slight scent. Carnauba wax is a pure vegetable wax with no questionable properties. Body Butter would be the better choice for someone who has extremely sensitive skin. The olive oil, shea butter, and carnauba wax used here have long shelf lives, but all have a slight scent.

Our white lotion / body butter is a combination of all-natural ingredients – delivering pure moisture, nourishment, and gentle care to your skin.
These are unscented, great for people with extra sensitive skin, and can be enhanced with essential oils for a pure and natural fragrance.

When adding essential oils, start with 10-15 drops per 2 ounces. Increase gradually for a stronger scent.

Traditional Essential Oils for Skin Care

General – Cedarwood, Chamomile, Cypress, Geranium, Lavender, Rosemary
Acne – Basil, Cedarwood, Grapefruit, Lavender, Tea Tree, Thyme
Chapped or Cracked Skin – Chamomile, Lavender
Infections – Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Thyme
Itching – Chamomile, Lavender, Peppermint
Aging Skin – Cypress, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender
Oily Skin – Cedarwood, Chamomile, Cypress, Frankincense, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Peppermint, Rosemary, Thyme
Blemishes – Oregano (a tiny dab on the spot – it’s strong!), Rosemary, Tea Tree, Thyme
Sensitive Skin – Chamomile
Toner – Chamomile, Frankincense, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Orange

Add a single oil or create a blend for your personal needs. Combine oils before adding to the lotion to make sure you like the scent. Experiment with a few drops of each oil to start.*

Most citrus oils are photosensitive, so if you include them, apply lotion at night or when your skin won’t be exposed to sunlight.

Lavender is soothing, healing, and conditioning to all skin types.

* For best results when blending, start with a base note oil (such as Cedarwood or Frankincense) and add others to it. Learn advanced blending techniques at www.earthsonnets.com/info/blendingoils.

Skin-Loving Ingredients

White Lotion (Click here for Body Butter Ingredients )

White lotion / body butter contains no artificial ingredients, chemical preservatives, or synthetic fragrances.

Shelf Life
Pure Generic White Lotion and/or Body Butter contains no harmful, synthetic preservatives. However, the Vitamin E acts contained in wheat germ oil as an anti-oxidant and can slow the natural breakdown of the lotion.

As an all-natural product, white lotion/body butter needs to be handled differently.

Many variables can affect shelf life, so you can expect yours to last somewhere between one and three months, depending on how you care for it.

Suggestions for extending shelf life:

Store what you’re using in a small container and pour lotion into your palm to reduce contamination to the lotion.

If your lotion or butter smells rancid, appears discolored, or develops microbes (black specks) or mold, it’s time to toss it. As always, use common sense and good judgment.

Body Butter Ingredients

Body Butter contains no artificial ingredients, chemical preservatives, or synthetic fragrances.

Emulsifying Wax Information

The emulsifying wax in our White Lotion is plant derived and contains the two properties below, which create an emulsifying agent when combined.

Ceteareth 20
This is a possible skin irritant and also increases the absorption of other present ingredients into the skin -- which isn't necessarily a problem when the other ingredients are pure and natural. Avoid using products containing ceteareth 20 on burned or damaged skin.

Cetearyl Alcohol
This is practically non-toxic, but may cause slight skin irritation in some. Cetearyl alcohol should not be confused with skin-drying ethyl alcohols. It is derived from fatty acids and is well known to effectively condition and soften the skin. People with extreme skin sensitivity should perform a skin patch test with products containing cetearyl alcohol before use.

If you want to avoid products with emulsifying wax, use our Body Butter instead of White Lotion.
